Introduction to Publishing the Academic Journal: A One-Day Workshop
I have not given this workshop in quite some time, but when I do it is an introduction to all aspects of publishing the academic journal. The goal of this workshop is to aid editors in improving their journals financially, technically, and academically. The first half of the workshop, during the morning, focuses on the technical aspects of managing a journal: copyediting and proofreading, working with style manuals, setting the correct front and back matter, preparing images for the printer, finding the right printer, following composition standards, setting up a subscription database, managing income, and so on. The second half of the workshop, during the afternoon, focuses on the intellectual tasks of running a journal: establishing standards, maintaining a fair peer review process, accepting and rejecting manuscripts, working with authors to improve their manuscripts, choosing editorial boards, and so on. Both halves of the workshop include discussion so that editors can tailor the workshop to their needs.
This workshop is occasionally offered by the UCLA Graduate Student Association to graduate students who are journal editors.
